Move Over laws

All 50 states have a Move Over law. The general rule: when you see stopped emergency vehicles, tow trucks or roadside assistance with flashing lights, move over one lane if you can do so safely — and if you can't, slow down well below the speed limit as you pass.

• • The laws cover police, fire and ambulance, and in every state they now also cover tow and roadside assistance vehicles.
• • Specific speed reductions and lane rules vary by state; when in doubt, move over a full lane and slow down.
• • Penalties range from fines to license points, and higher penalties if someone is injured.
• • This is the law that protects the tow operator walking around your car on the shoulder — and it protects you standing next to it.
• • Roadside workers and stranded drivers are struck and killed every year in the U.S. Moving over is the cheapest thing you can do to stop it.
